Within the stifle joint there are two menisci (medial and lateral) which are C-shaped cartilage structures. Their function is to absorb and disperse force around the stifle, lubricate the joint and help maintain the overall joint stability. Dogs and Cats of any age and breed can sustain meniscal injuries and where the cruciate ligament has ruptured there is often concurrent meniscal damage with the medial meniscus being the more commonly injured of the two menisci. Repair of meniscal injuries is vital and can only be achieved surgically. Medical management isn’t an option due to the constant back and forth movement of the damaged meniscus, which will cause severe pain and accelerate degenerative joint disease if left for any length of time. As meniscal injuries go hand in hand with cruciate rupture it is important that when treating cruciate injuries the meniscus is simultaneously examined and repaired if needed. The following instruments are designed to aid visualisation of the menisci and subsequent repair.
