Unless you have a very compliant patient, it is impossible to ascertain exactly what will need to be done in a patient’s mouth when they are conscious.
It is easy to see there is a problem but sometimes the poorest mouth, where you are expecting multiple extractions, can be in surprisingly good condition once it is cleaned up and the opposite can also be true. Once the patient is anaesthetised and the tartar removed, the teeth must be properly examined to decide on the best course of action.

This section of our dentistry chapter covers the different instruments we have for this stage of the dental procedure, including explorers, probes, curettes and scalers.
