Antibiotic Impregnated Polymethyl Methacrylate (AIPMMA) beads have been used in human medicine since the 1970’s for the treatment and prevention of infection. This product has been successfully implemented in many areas of veterinary medicine including the treatment of abscesses which often occur in rabbits and can be linked to dental problems. A useful ally for the treatment of rabbit abscesses when prolonged treatment with long term systemic antibiotics would be contraindicated. The AIPMMA beads provide a high local concentration of antibiotic with low systemic absorption and therefore low toxicity.

VETisco offer 2 types of high viscosity bone cement suitable for making these beads. One containing Gentamycin and one without so that your antibiotic of choice can be added if a culture and sensitivity indicates this.

For full instructions on how to make these beads, please contact us. Instructions can also be found on the internet as this method is covered extensively by many sources, but we would be happy to provide them if needed.
It is important to remember that the use of bone cement is not licensed for use in rabbits and therefore any treatment technique is unlicensed. VETisco accept no responsibility for using these products in this way and this should also be made clear to the owners of the patient before proceeding.
